I underestimated Hubert Ulysse in a big way; for years I thought he was reeled in from Haiti just to be another front man or even a fall guy. Pete made a major error when he brought Hubert to Norfolk - Hubert was made a member of the International Board. Why would I call this an error on Pete's part? Hubert, for as long as I have known him, held himself to a higher standard of integrity than the other pastors. He was already married when he joined CFCMI, and was never a part of transcript star activities. Unlike three of the "Foolish Four," Hubert worked a regular job as a master electrician and building inspector. Being made a board member placed Hubert on equal ground, something he never enjoyed previously. As an equal, Hubert was able to finally see and review for himself a good bit of the financial information, especially the profits from building sales; he realized the numbers didn't add up. At that point, Hubert did the unthinkable - he challenged Pete, Ed, Bruce, and Dan in the closed door session. Hubert demanded answers concerning the state of church finances. At the end of that meeting, Hubert's integrity won. Of course, Pete will never publicly acknowledge his defeat at the hand of the Haitian hero. Stories had to be concocted to hide the shame of the resignations. Ed's cover story was easy; his health problems made it easy for Pete to use that for an excuse. Bruce was always considered expendable, so the cover story was made that Bruce was needed more in the private sector than in the church. Dan Lantis...a few payoffs and a relocation package to the California goo pond were made, leaving the lunatic to his own devices. While this event was not the fatal blow, Hubert's willingness to stand up to the other pastors most definitely weakened their ability to lie, cheat, and swindle people. Why didn't Pete fire Hubert? Simply put, he had no one left to replace him. That which is done in secret shall indeed be revealed.
