How many ex-CFCMI recall the Yellow Ribbon Campaign?  This started in 1993 as a movement to pray for L.R. Davis' release from prison.  At the time of his sentencing, he was initially placed in Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, Illinois.  This was a maximum security prison where the roughest criminals were incarcerated.  After a time, partly due to Davis' health, he was transferred to the Dixon Correctional Center.

The reason we were told to wear the yellow ribbons was this: L.R. Davis was falsely accused of the crimes for which he was convicted and sentenced.  Pete and Ed fed this line for years until after Davis passed away; me and many others at the time who were not pat of the inner circle then honestly believed Davis was innocent.  We wore those infernal ribbons every single day, even when we went to foreign ports (where nobody even cared).  We endured ridicule "for the gospel's sake" wearing those ribbons.  During one visit to West Virginia, my mother and I talked about Davis and she asked "what if it turned out he was guilty?"  I answered "that would not change God's word."

Of course, once the word was revealed that Davis was in fact guilty, I felt really stupid and betrayed.  We were lied to for so many years about Davis, and it turned out he deserved to be locked up!  Thank God he did not get released to hurt anymore people.  And finally, I thank God to be no longer there.

Hi John!  Great site!

What was up with those yellow ribbons?  Did you pin them on, or tie them around your neck?  I didn't know you wore them all the time.  I just thought you had to wear them around Hazel.

We wore the yellow ribbons like we would regular lapel pins.  Yes, we were told we had to wear them all the time; some poor sailors even tried wearing them in uniform (only to have their superiors order the ribbon removed while in uniform).  No, I did not go to THAT extreme, but I recall being overseas with a fella who is now a current staffer in Norfolk; he got upset because I opted not to wear the ribbon in civvies while in a foreign port.  I did not think anyone really cared, so why did it matter?  Ah, but then I heard the comments about "how much do you want L.R. Davis free" to no end.

Once L.R. infarcted, Hazel herself asked everyone to quit wearing the ribbons.

Yeah, I bet she was glad he was dead.

That ribbon thing seemed ridiculous.  Were the oldheads wearing them???  After all, they were the first to be hit on by that freak.

Yes, even the oldheads were wearing the ribbons.  Sure, there was some grumbling, but Ed and Pete made absolute sure you were either "for them or against them".  Some of the guys honestly beleived Davis was innocent.  I know I did - only because at the time I didn't know any better.

Looking back, I am sure everyone we knew thought we looked SOOOOOOOO stupid wearing the yellow ribbons, especially those who knew Davis was guilty.

Iforgot all about that, but I do now.  I think she did that every year till L.R. died.  Of course, I was blind to the truth then, so I thought nothing of it...I am thinking you must have left shortly after all that mess went down.

Yellow ribbons on the Christmas tree??

Sick.

They can't honestly believe LR was innocent, can they?  That is severely delusional, and scary.

That was my post, I forgot to log in. I left in late '99.

I remember when the great "profit" died, I felt so disillusioned, and I felt like something was just not quite right... it was at that time that my eyes began opening.

Aimoo_Guest: Yellow ribbons on the Christmas tree?? Sick.  They can't honestly believe LR was innocent, can they?  That is severely delusional, and scary.

Many of us honestly believed L.R. Davis was innocent because we were duped by Pete, Ed, and Dan into thinking he was falsely accused and wrongly convicted of his crimes.  Once I was able to read the court records for myself, plus a conversation with Dionne McIntyre (along with her former husband Alan founded AbusiveChurches.org), I couldn't defend Davis anymore.

Anyone who still believes Davis is innocent is either in denial, deceived, or delusional.
